M.Puttarudraiah was born in a farming community on 16th December 1903 at Magadi in Bangalore district of the then Mysore State. After completing his early education in his home town he joined Central College, Bangalore and completed B.Sc(Honors) Degree with distinction. He obtained M.S. and Ph.D degree from University of California, Berkley.
Dr. M. Puttarudraiah was an outstanding entomologist and an inspiring teacher with an enviable record of nearly five decades of service in the cause of farmers. Whether in active service as the State Government Entomologist, or Professor of Entomology and later the Principal and Director of Instruction (Agri), Agricultural College, Hebbal under the University of Agricultural Sciences, (UAS) Bangalore and even after retirement Dr. Puttarudraiah always emphasized the need for careful field studies and practical applications of science for the benefit of farmers. Many of his students, colleagues and admirers fondly remember him even after two decades of his demise.
Dr M. Puttarudraiah Endowment committee, UAS, Bangalore and Institution of Agricultural Technologists have entered into an agreement by signing an Endowment Deed on 23rd March 1995. Accordingly an amount of Rs 135670.40 was transferred to IAT. The deed provides for continuation of activities to perpetuate the memory of Late Dr. M. Puttarudraiah.
The endowment has instituted a Cash Award of Rs. 10000/- for the outstanding Plant Protection Research worker in the country. Applications are received from different parts of the country. Nominees represent various State Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes and other Research and Development organizations. A panel of judges consisting of eminent scientists is formed to screen the applications for deciding the Awardee. The award is presented with a felicitation in a befitting function where the recipient of the previous award makes a presentation.
